About the Call for Grant

The ESRC Research Grants scheme supports high-quality, impactful research projects, large-scale surveys, and methodological innovations within the social sciences, economics, and human data science. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (part of UKRI), this scheme encourages both standard disciplinary projects and complex, interdisciplinary research that addresses shifting economic, behavioral, and societal challenges.

Eligibility

Applications must strictly align with standard UKRI/ESRC institutional criteria:
- The Principal Investigator (Project Lead) must be based at an eligible UK research organisation (university, public sector research establishment, or independent research organisation).
- International Co-investigators (including researchers and institutions based in Kazakhstan) are fully eligible to be included in the proposal, provided their involvement brings clear value to the project and is fully justified.

The scheme funds projects led by individual researchers or collaborative academic consortia.

Funding Details & Application Timeline

💰 Funding Amount:
The standard award range for ESRC Research Grants is between £350,000 and £1,000,000 (100% full economic cost). ESRC typically funds 80% of the full economic cost for UK institutions, but international co-investigator costs can be claimed under specific international alliance agreements.

⏱️ Grant Duration:
Grants can last for a period of up to 5 years, providing long-term structural stability for deep scientific investigation.

📅 Application Deadline:
No closing dates (Open on a rolling basis). Applications are accepted and peer-reviewed year-round.

📊 Processing Window:
Proposals undergo a rigorous academic peer-review process followed by a panel assessment. Applicants should expect a turnaround time of approximately 26 to 30 weeks from submission to the final funding decision.
