The Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU) attracted global interest at the 2024 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). The university's team demonstrated remarkable proficiency in solving one of the most challenging problems of the finals, garnering global recognition and reinforcing Kazakhstan's strong position on the global programming stage.
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is a highly regarded global competition for university students, widely recognised in the fields of computer science and programming. It encourages the development of programming skills and algorithmic thinking, while facilitating collaboration between universities and companies. Participation in ICPC provides a valuable opportunity for future specialists, particularly those seeking employment at leading global IT companies. This year's event, held from 15 to 20 September in Astana, saw the participation of over 1,400 individuals from 50 countries, including teams from leading universities such as MIT, Harvard, KAIST, Tsinghua, Oxford, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).
KBTU's team made history by becoming the first of 140 teams worldwide to solve the complex "Problem D" during the ICPC World Finals. This marks the eighth occasion that KBTU has qualified for the ICPC World Finals, representing the highest number of qualifications from Kazakhstan.
Kazakh teams have a proven track record of delivering outstanding results, which has cemented their reputation as a competitive force on the international stage. A significant number of former ICPC participants now contribute to the global IT sector, working with renowned companies such as Google, Microsoft, Booking.com, and Facebook. This year, Kazakhstan was represented by five teams: The participating institutions were KBTU, IITU, AITU, Nazarbayev University and SDU University.
It is worth noting that KBTU, AITU, and IITU are supported by the NNEF Public Fund, which was co-founded by Timur and Dinara Kulibayev. They facilitate the growth of universities through investments in infrastructure, modern equipment, and the creation of a conducive educational environment. The universities feature laboratories and certification centres for world-renowned vendors, including Apple, Microsoft, Huawei, Cisco, Kaspersky Lab, 1C, SAP and others.
