About the Call for Grant
The VolkswagenStiftung "Open Up – New Research Spaces for the Humanities and Cultural Studies" funding initiative supports highly explorative, original, and multi-perspective research collaborations. The program targets complex, previously unexamined research fields that require innovative conceptual frameworks. Rather than funding incremental studies on well-known subjects, "Open Up" specifically backs high-risk academic projects where the potential failure to achieve the initial hypothesis is accepted as an inherent part of pioneering scholarship.
Eligibility
The program enforces mandatory international/German structural pairing:
- Lead Applicant Status: The Principal Investigator (main applicant) must be officially affiliated with a German university or public research institution at the time of funding administration.
- International Co-Applicants: Research teams consisting of two or three investigators can include international scholars. Professors, PhD holders, and cultural researchers from institutions in Kazakhstan and Central Asia are fully eligible to be funded as official project partners/co-applicants.
- Academic Requirement: All participating applicants must hold a completed doctorate (Ph.D. / Doctor of Sciences) and exhibit a strong tracking record in theoretical fields.
- Field Scope: Restricted to the Humanities, Cultural Studies, and Theoretical Social Sciences. Purely clinical, technical, or commercial projects are strictly excluded.
Priority Areas
- Identification of Entirely New and Complex Knowledge Spaces
- Interdisciplinary Approaches to Unexplored Cultural and Historical Phenomena
- High-Exploration Methodologies Transforming Theoretical Social Sciences
Format:
Funding Allocation Mechanics & Peer-Review Innovation
💰 Funding Volume & Tranches:
The financial scale depends directly on the number of collaborating partners within the research team:
- 2-Partner Collaborations: Funded up to a maximum of €300,000 per project.
- 3-Partner Collaborations: Funded up to a maximum of €400,000 per project.
Allowable expenses include research staff salaries, travel costs, workshop organisation, and funding for a teaching substitute to free up the investigators’ creative time.
⏱️ Project Duration:
The grant provides fast-track funding structured for a concise duration of up to 1.5 years (18 months).
📅 Application Deadlines & Cycle Status:
- Deadlines & Tracking: Application cycles open periodically. Applicants must monitor the official program platform regularly for the announcement of upcoming call dates, specific cut-off deadlines, and future programmatic updates.
- Note for Databases: The VolkswagenStiftung utilizes these exploratory results to launch subsequent targeted calls under its "Exploration" profile area.
🔄 Distributed Peer Review (DPR) Experiment:
This program utilizes a dual selection workflow. Applications undergo an internal administrative pre-screening, followed by an innovative parallel evaluation: a conventional expert panel review running alongside a Distributed Peer Review (DPR) mechanism, where applicants themselves anonymously score peer proposals under rigorous RoRI quality guidelines. Decisions are finalized approximately 8 months post-submission.
