About the Call for Grant

The IEEE Foundation Funding Requests program provides financial support to innovative, technology-centric projects that align with the mission of IEEE: advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The Foundation seeks to invest in philanthropic initiatives that address underserved social needs, improve access to technical education, preserve the history of engineering, and introduce youth to STEM fields. Rather than funding pure academic research, this program prioritizes practical deployment, hands-on engineering education, and humanitarian technology solutions implemented by global tech communities.

Eligibility

The program operates on a global scale with clear structural rules:
- Organisational Status: Grants are primarily awarded to IEEE organizational units (such as IEEE Sections, Student Branches, and Technical Chapters worldwide, including the IEEE Kazakhstan Section).
- Non-IEEE Entities: Non-profit organisations, educational institutions, and NGOs outside the U.S. can also apply, provided they partner with a local IEEE unit or demonstrate a deeply technical, peer-supported engineering component.
- Exclusions: The Foundation does not fund pure basic research, university tuition, general operating expenses of institutions, building construction, or political/religious activities.

Priority Areas
- IEEE Smart Village Initiatives (bringing renewable energy and web connectivity to off-grid communities)
- STEM Outreach and Engineering Education for Underrepresented Youth
- Technology-Driven Humanitarian Relief and Community Resilience Projects
- Preservation and History of Electrical, Electronic, and Computing Technologies

Funding Metrics & Two-Stage Evaluation Cycle

💰 Funding Scale:
Grant allocations typically range from $5,000 to $100,000 per project. Most approved grants sit within the mid-tier bracket of $15,000 to $50,000. Funded budgets focus tightly on direct project delivery costs, equipment, workshop organization, and technological prototyping.

⏱️ Project Timelines:
Projects are expected to be actionable and completed within a 12 to 24-month timeframe, showing measurable societal impact.

📅 Deadlines & Application Process:
The IEEE Foundation usually manages a strict bi-annual or annual intake timeline utilizing a mandatory two-step system:
1. Project Concept Note: A brief initial submission detailing the core philanthropic mission, technological component, and target community.
2. Invited Full Proposal: Projects that clear the initial board screening are invited to submit a detailed project plan, exact technical architecture, and line-item budget.

🔄 Evaluation Criteria:
Proposals are peer-reviewed by engineering experts based on technical feasibility, sustainability after the grant ends, clarity of targeted outputs (e.g., number of students trained, communities connected), and strong alignment with IEEE values.
