About the Call for Grant

The COST Action program is an EU-funded framework that enables researchers to set up their own interdisciplinary research networks, called "COST Actions." These networks offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe and beyond. COST does not fund research per se, but instead covers the costs of coordination, networking, and capacity building. It is a unique entry point for scientists to integrate their work into major European research agendas.

Eligibility

- Geographic Scope: COST is open to researchers from "COST Full Members" (European countries) and "Near-Neighbour Countries" (including Kazakhstan and other Central Asian states).
- Participant Role: Kazakhstani researchers can join existing COST Actions as members of a Management Committee or as Working Group participants.
- Academic Requirement: Open to researchers at all career stages—from Ph.D. students and early-career investigators (ECIs) to senior professors.
- Institutional Requirement: Applicants must be affiliated with a university, research center, or an entity involved in R&D.

Format:

Networking & Collaboration Mechanics

💰 Funding Structure:
- Travel Grants: Full reimbursement for researchers to attend meetings, workshops, and training schools organized within a COST Action.
- Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs): Grants for researchers to visit another laboratory or institute (usually for 5–90 days) to learn new techniques, access equipment, or conduct joint work.
- Networking Expenses: Funding for publishing open-access papers, organizing international conferences, and hosting training schools.

⏱️ Project Duration:
- COST Actions typically last 4 years. Researchers can join at any time during the lifecycle of an Action.

📅 Application Deadlines & Status:
- Open Call: COST operates a continuous "Open Call" system. Proposals for new аctions can be submitted once a year (usually in late autumn).
- Joining Existing Networks: You do not need to wait for a call to join an existing Action. Scientists can apply to join an ongoing network at any time by contacting the relevant Action Chair.

🔄 How to use this for research:
Researchers browse the "COST Actions" catalog (over 300 active networks), find a project relevant to their field, and request to join. Once accepted, they gain access to the entire network’s funding for travel, training, and collaborative writing.
