About the Call for Grant

The Cooperative AI Foundation (CAIF) supports fundamental research aimed at improving the 'cooperative intelligence' of advanced AI systems. The foundation's mission is to ensure that as AI becomes more capable, it is developed to foster beneficial interactions rather than conflict, collusion, or competitive failure. This is a highly technical, research-intensive grant aimed at academics, PhD students, and specialized research labs working on multi-agent systems, game theory, and AI safety.

Eligibility

- Geographic Inclusivity: Global. Researchers and institutions from anywhere in the world (including Kazakhstan) are eligible if their research aligns with CAIF’s technical mission.
- Academic Requirement: The program targets researchers with a strong background in computer science, machine learning, economics, or game theory.
- Project Scope: Projects must focus on 'Cooperative AI'—research that explores how AI agents can learn to cooperate, negotiate, and maintain long-term alignment with human interests in complex multi-agent environments.
- Tracks: The foundation typically offers a Standard Research track and an Early-Career track (for individuals or small research projects).

Format:

Funding & Program Status

💰 Funding Architecture:
- Financial Scope: Grants range from £10,000 to over £380,000, with a median around £150,000 per project.
- Duration: Up to 2 years for standard projects; 12 months for early-career projects.
- Nature of Funding: These are research grants, not commercial investments. They are designed to support rigorous, publishable academic inquiry.

📅 Cycle Status:
- Status: CLOSED (The 2025/early 2026 grant cycle has concluded).
- Next Steps: The foundation does not have a strict annual calendar but periodically announces new funding windows.
- Monitoring: This is a "must-watch" organization. Applicants should subscribe to their official newsletter or periodically check the CAIF funding page for the next "Request for Proposals" (RFP).

🔄 Selection Logic:
- Competitive Process: The foundation prioritizes highly specific technical research that addresses "neglected" problems in AI safety and cooperation. Proposals should clearly identify why the research is important and how it fills a gap in current literature.
