About the Call for Grant
The DataCite Global Access Program (GAP) is a systemic initiative to broaden the adoption of Persistent Identifier (PID) services—such as DOIs for datasets, software, and other research outputs—in regions beyond the Global North. While DataCite is a technical infrastructure provider, the GAP initiative focuses on capacity building, reducing financial barriers, and ensuring that research from emerging economies becomes discoverable, reusable, and globally connected. It is not a general-purpose grant but a highly targeted mechanism to professionalize institutional research repositories.
Eligibility
- Geographic Focus: Open primarily to non-profit stakeholders (universities, research libraries, NRENs, government research bodies) based in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia.
- Institutional Status: Organizations must be legal entities capable of implementing digital repository infrastructure.
- Mission Alignment: Priority is given to projects that aim to integrate PID services (DOI registration) into local research workflows and improve the visibility of local research outputs.
- Membership Status: Open to both existing DataCite members and organizations that are not yet members but wish to integrate DataCite services.

Funding & Program Focus
💰 Funding Scope (via the Global Access Fund - GAF):
- Purpose: Financial support for (1) Outreach and engagement activities (training, workshops), (2) Infrastructure development (integrating DataCite APIs into local repositories), and (3) Demonstrators (pilots of open science workflows).
- Scale: Targeted grants to cover project-specific costs related to technical integration and community training.
⏱️ Project Nature:
- Technical/Capacity Building: Projects are typically 6–12 months long, focused on technical implementation or regional training.
📅 Application Status:
- Status: Managed in cohort-based rounds.
- Monitoring: This is not an "open all year" application portal. DataCite announces "rounds" of funding for the Global Access Fund periodically.
- Tracking: Applicants should follow the DataCite blog and community mailing list, as new rounds are announced via these channels.
🔄 Why it matters:
Success in this program provides not just funding, but also technical mentorship from DataCite and the inclusion of the institution’s research into the global metadata ecosystem, making local Kazakhstani research visible to major international discovery platforms (like Google Scholar, etc.).
